National Museum of Ireland
Museums serve as the sanctuary of remnants, relics and memoirs of a place’s history and culture. They are excellent spots to visit if you want to get a better understanding of a place’s beginning, tradition and culture. When in Dublin, Ireland, a visit to the National Museum of Ireland should be part of your travel itinerary.
The National Museum of Ireland has three divisions: Archaeology, Decorative Arts and History, and the Natural History. These three divisions present several artefacts pertaining to Ireland’s archaeological, decorative, historical and natural prides.
National Museum Of Ireland – Archaeology
The National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology can be visited on Kildare Street. It displays archaeological collections as old as 7000 BC. This museum was opened in 1890 and since that time it has not stopped amusing tourists and Dubliners alike with its rich archaeological display.
The museum’s “Treasury” showcases art exhibits featuring art pieces of the Celtic and Medieval period. Visitors can marvel at the renowned Ardagh Chalice, Tara Brooch and the Derrynaflan Hoard. There is also an exhibit of some found bodies as old as the Iron Age at the Kingship and Sacrifice Exhibition.
The Archaelogy museum also offers a café, gift shop, and education resource room. From Tuesdays to Saturdays, the museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sundays, it serves visitors from 2 pm to 5 pm. Don’t come here on Mondays as the museum is closed.
National Museum Of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History
The museum displays a collection of Ireland’s artefacts commemorating the country’s economic, social, political and military history and development. In this museum, you can marvel at silver, ceramic, and glassware displays. There are also exhibits of weapons, furniture, and Irish costumes.
There is Military History Exhibition that showcases military artefacts, original letters and some proofs of the military and war influence on the lives of the people. The museum has a café, gift shop and education resource room. Its operation schedule is the same as the “archaeology”.
National Museum Of Ireland – Natural History
The National Museum of Ireland – Natural History was opened in 1857 along Merrion Street. Aside from the natural artefacts displayed in the museum, the Victorian styled cabinet adds to the attraction. The museum has around two million species in display. Most of the displays are insects.
The museum also houses wildlife from Ireland and other parts of the world. Some of the species are already extinct. The museum has a gift shop for visitors who wish to bring home something from their visit. The schedule of operation is the same as the other museums comprising the National Museum of Ireland.
